How to Limit Broadband Connection Speed

In a modern home, it is not uncommon to find a single Internet connection shared by several computers. While it is a wonderful convenience to be able to pay a single bill and have Internet access split among all of the computers in the household, problems can sometimes be caused when some members of the household use the Internet for entertainment, and you use it for work. However, you can use bandwidth limiting software on the other computers in the household to make sure that their gaming, music downloading and video watching cannot saturate the bandwidth of your Internet connection when you need it most.

Instructions

Traffic Shaper XP

* 1 Download Traffic Shaper XP, at bandwidthcontroller.com, on the computer you want limited. Double-click the setup file---TrafficShaperXpSetup.exe---when the download is complete. Click "Next" through the prompts to install the software.

* 2 Click "Finish" when the installation process is complete. Traffic Shaper XP opens, and a window titled "Welcome to the Network Configuration Wizard" appears. Click "Next."

* 3 Use the drop-down menus next to "Download Capacity" and "Upload Capacity" to determine the speed of the Internet connection (in kilobits per second). The drop-down menus have several predefined values for you to select from, or you can type a speed manually. Click "Next."

* 4 Click the network connection that you want to limit the speed for. In most cases, you should choose "Local Area Connection." Click "Next."

* 5 Click "Finish" to save your settings.
